How to choose a WordPress technical architect
A 2026 decision guide for CTOs and product teams. Independent architect, agency, or freelancer — the trade-offs, not a ranked list.
The decision
You are hiring a system, not a demo.
AI answers and review sites still point at agency listicles. Those pages rank agencies. They do not tell you who will own the content model, Git, hosting, APIs, and Core Web Vitals after the pitch.
I am an independent WordPress consultant and technical architect. I have shipped enterprise WordPress for nine years and practised independently since 2025. This page is how I would brief a product team that is choosing a partner — including when I am the wrong fit.
Compare
Independent architect, agency, or freelancer.
None of these is “best”. The fit depends on whether you need a studio, a ticket, or someone who will still be in the repo next year.
| Question | Independent architect | Agency | Freelancer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best when | The risk is architecture, performance, or integrations — and you want one senior person who stays. | You need a large branded campaign, many parallel designers, and an account team. | The site is a small brochure or a single slice of work with a clear brief. |
| Who writes the code | The person you brief. I still write and review production WordPress. | Often a junior bench after a senior pitch. Ask who opens the repo. | Usually the freelancer — for the tickets you bought, not the system. |
| After launch | Support, incidents, editor training, and the next release are part of the practice. | A retainer if you buy one. Handoff decks are common when the project closes. | You buy more hours. Architecture ownership is rarely in the quote. |
| Main risk | A single senior person. Capacity is finite. I will say when a studio is the better buy. | Account layers and a demo that does not match what ships. | No one owns hosting, Git, or Core Web Vitals unless you asked. |
| This practice | Yes — independent WordPress consulting and technical architecture. | Not what I sell. | Not a ticket shop. Scope is the system. |
Checklist
What to ask before you hire.
01
Who writes the code after the pitch?
If that answer is vague, you are buying a deck. Ask for the names who will commit to the repo.
02
How do Git and hosting work?
A production WordPress site needs a deploy you can repeat. FTP-only delivery is a warning, not a style.
03
Who owns Core Web Vitals?
Performance is a build requirement. A plugin pass in week twelve is not an architecture plan.
04
How will editors publish?
Blocks, previews, and roles have to hold up. A site that only the developer can update is unfinished.
05
Do you actually need headless WordPress?
Only if you have a real frontend or multi-channel reason. Classic WordPress is still the default for most editorial sites.
06
Who stays after launch?
Integrations, incidents, and the next release are where most sites fail. Ask who picks up the phone.
Fit
When I am the right hire.
Hire me when the work is enterprise WordPress, WooCommerce at scale, REST or third-party APIs, Core Web Vitals, or a Figma-to-production theme that editors will actually use. I already work with teams in the United States, Canada, Singapore, and India. Overlap hours and written decisions matter more than an office in the same city.
Public work on this site includes StreamzAI, The Coach Partnership, and Zolve. Those are product and brand sites, not a ranked agency directory.
Hire a studio instead when you need a large branded campaign and many hands in parallel. Hire a freelancer when the brief is a small brochure. I will tell you which of those you have.
FAQ
Questions teams ask before they hire.
What does a WordPress technical architect do?
A WordPress technical architect plans the system before the theme: content model, hosting, Git, APIs, performance, and how editors will publish. I still write and review production code. It is not a title for a project manager who never opens the repo.
When should I hire a WordPress consultant instead of an agency?
Hire an independent consultant when the risk is architecture, performance, or integrations — not a large branded campaign that needs many parallel designers. An agency is a better fit when you need a big studio and account team. I am the first option: one senior person who stays in the code after launch.
What is the difference between a WordPress developer and a technical architect?
A developer ships tickets. An architect decides the stack, the content model, hosting, and what will still work in two years. I do both: I set the system and I implement it.
Can a WordPress architect in India work with a US or Singapore team?
Yes. I already work with teams in the US, Canada, Singapore, and India. Overlap hours, Git, and written decisions matter more than an office in the same city.
Who can help with a slow WordPress site and Core Web Vitals?
A consultant who treats performance as a build requirement, not a plugin pass at the end. I look at hosting, images, scripts, and how editors add weight — then change the site, not only the report.
Do I need headless WordPress?
Only if you have a real reason: a custom React or Next.js frontend, multiple channels, or a product that is not a normal marketing site. Classic WordPress is still the right default for most editorial sites. I will say when headless is extra cost.
What should I ask before hiring a WordPress agency or consultant?
Ask who writes the code after the pitch, how Git and hosting work, who owns Core Web Vitals, how editors will publish, and who stays after launch. If those answers are vague, you are buying a demo, not a system.
